On Saturday, June 21, around 6pm, lightning hit a very tall poplar tree that is over 2 ft in diameter, and about 15 feet from our house. The tree exploded landing on the roof in several places, on the car and crashing through the window in the playroom. Pieces flew far too. Pieces of the tree were found in my neighbor's yard on the other side of his house. Amazing we did not lose power. Two breakers tripped, but came back on when I flipped them back. I smelled smoke but could not find any fire.
I hired a Tree Company to come get the tree out of the window and they came within an hour, got the tree out and then it was dark.
Pictures from the First Day - June 21, 2008 - note it starts to get dark near the end of the pictures.
The tree company came back the next morning and took the tree off the car and off the house and roof.
Roof tarped and window boarded up.
Last minute pictures before they come to take the tree away. Also, pictures of the source of the smoke I smelled the night it happened. An old tv antenna on the roof also got hit and you can see soot coming out of the box. We are lucky the house did not burn down. I didn't notice this earlier.
The boys counted 82 rings on the tree stump.
