Research Interests


Broad interest in cloud and grid computing, data mining, distributed system, data stream processing and embedded systems.





Scientific Publications

Coauthored in English one book chapter and 18 international conference papers. A selected list of my publications has been submitted to the online application system separately.



Designed and implemented

  • a DES-based load-balancing algorithm for distributed OLAP databases.
  • a cloud workflow optimization algorithm (described in item [5] in my publication list in the C.V. section “Selected Publication List”).


Cloud and grid computing

Designed and implemented

  • a private cloud including 30 compute nodes using Nimbus [1].
  • various kinds of cloud and grid applications for data mining, stream processing, sensor networking and model visualization [2, 3, 8, 10, 11].


Data mining

Designed and implemented

  • a distributed and parallel cloud-based decision tree application based on the SPRINT algorithm [3].
  • a distributed and parallel grid-based Back-Propagation Neural Network application using the parallel language Titanium [8].
  • a fuzzy Back-Propagation Neural Network application on FPGA [9].


Data stream processing

Designed and implemented

  • a cloud-based platform for data stream analysis and processing [2].
  • a sensor network with stream processing and persistence functions using distributed OLAP databases.

  • Parallel programming languages: Titanium (a Java-like parallel language using MPI libraries, developed by UC Berkley).
  • Hardware design language: VHDL.
  • Assembly language: languages for ATMega family microcontrollers and for AMD assemblers.


Cloud/grid related tools

  • Nimbus, Eucalyptus and OpenNebula: used to establish different types of clouds with 5-30 nodes.
  • Globus Toolkit v4: used to establish a grid with two clusters.


Data mining and stream processing tools

  • Esper: a stream management tool, used in teaching the course “Scientific Data Management”.
  • Weka: used its neural network module to build a cloud-based data mining platform [1]; used in teaching the course “Scientific Data Management”.
  • MOA: a stream mining tool, used to construct a cloud-based stream processing platform [2].


Web services

Practically familiar with SOAP and RESTful Web services.
